The Ways of Water

Water is irresistible – in so many ways.

Detail, Art Quilt by Bobbi Baugh Looking Below the surface

In the world around us, we want to: Feel it as rain falling on our face. Jump into it for a cool swim. Walk in it at the ocean’s edge. Stare down into it to imagine the world beneath.

Water moves, and our experience of it can change from moment to moment.

No wonder I enjoy depicting water in my works.

Art Quilt by Bobbi Baugh Escape to Quiet Waters

This whole cloth quilt, Escape to Quiet Waters, was inspired by some randomly painted shapes worked wet-into-wet on a sheer piece of fabric. The first layers were spontaneous. Then I used stencils and a wheat paste resist to build up the depth. I enjoyed stitching in wave-like patterns to enhance the feel of water.

Art quilt by Bobbi Baugh Discerning What Is Real

This depiction of water was inspired by a shallow beside-the-road ditch near my home. I loved the way trees reflected n it, causing me to wonder what was reflected and what was real.

Paper and Textile Collage by Bobbi Baugh And Then the Storm Was Over

This collage was inspired by pieces of fabric scraps that suggested a strong storm. I composed it into a fabric and paper collage, composing in fragmented pieces. It speaks to me of the fast-moving nature of storms.

Art Quilt by Bobbi Baugh Florida Undercurrents

Part of the pleasure of working in collage, paint and textiles is the availability of so many ways of creating images. The artwork can be as full of change and movement as water itself.
